코퀴할라 캐년 주립공원 북단에 자리잡은 오셀로 터널은 겹겹이 겹친 계곡을 뚫고 연결된 경이로운 동굴이다. 혼자 걸어가기에는 조금 오싹할 정도로 두려움을 주는 동굴터널이기도 하다. 그러나 그 캄캄한 동굴을 통과하는 산책경은 잊을 수 없는 경험이 된다.

 

또한 동굴 사이로 계곡이 수직으로 내려와 여행자의 가슴에 신비로운 풍경을 선사하고 협곡 사이로 흐르는 강렬한 진초록의 강물은 청명하게 흘러가며 마음 깊은 곳을 씻어내 준다.

 

1900년대에 BC주 남단 해안과 쿠트니를 잇는 철로 개설작업이 시작되어 이곳이 터널로 뚫어진 것이다. 지금은 사용하지 않지만 작은 운반용 철로로 남아 있다. 그 옛날에 구식 장비로 이렇게 거대한 터널공사를 완성한 것은 참으로 불가사이한 일 중에 하나다.

 

여러 개의 터널이 연결된 이곳은 암벽으로 형성된 절벽으로 그 경치를 더욱 아름답게 가꿔주고 있다. 호프 동쪽에 위치한 이곳은 4Km가 채 안되는 트레일코스이기도 하다.

 

이곳을 방문했을 때 어디서도 쉽게 볼 수 없는 시커먼 동굴 입구부터, 물이 뚝뚝 떨어지는 동굴속으로 걸어가며 노래를 부르면 그 증폭되는 울림으로 심장이 두근거리고 만다. 플레쉬를 준비해 가면 더 편리한 동굴산책을 경험하게 된다.
